3 Ways to Avoid Getting Screwed When Buying a Used Car This Tax Season
Guess what is right around the corner? It’s tax season. Many drivers will use their tax refunds to pull the trigger on a used car. However, there are mistakes that leave you stuck with a lemon. The Better Business Bureau gets complaints about it every year, so here is what you need to do.
Three ways to avoid getting stuck with a terrible used car
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns drivers ahead of tax refund season about using the money to get a used car. According to KTSB, the BBB received 17,000 complaints related to used vehicle sales in 2024.
This is up from about 15,000 complaints in 2023. Drivers share that they get vehicles that develop serious issues shortly after making their purchase.
They get stuck with massive repair bills and monthly payments. The biggest complaint is about buying a vehicle that doesn’t work. So here’s how to avoid that trouble.
1. Verbal statements aren’t actual agreements
A dealership will sell a vehicle “as is,” meaning it has no warranty after pulling off the lot. However, the Federal Trade Commission requires dealers to post a buyer’s guide showing whether a warranty is included.
Also, verbal statements don’t constitute an actual agreement. If it’s not in writing, then you don’t have an agreement. Don’t forget to actually read all of the paperwork as well.
2. Don’t be blinded by love
People get excited and hop on deals before making sure the vehicle is actually in good condition. People forget to look under the hood and at other important areas.
Before finalizing a deal, get the car inspected by an independent mechanic. Also, research the dealership to make sure it isn’t linked to shady practices.
3. Get the V.I.N
Review the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number before buying a used car to review its history. Anyone can simply type the V.I.N in online to look it up. This way, you’ll see if it has been in any accidents.
If a dealership refuses to show you the vehicle’s history or buyer’s guide, then that is a massive red flag to consider.
