Three California gas stations face a $1.16 settlement for spilling fuel
The owners of three gas stations in California have to pay up. They face a settlement of $1.16 million that was reached during an environmental protection lawsuit.
About 52 gallons of fuel were spilled near the North Yuba River. Sherali Gas Corporation runs the stations in Davis, Woodland, and Downieville. It was hit with $1 million in civil penalties.
According to Fox 40, the company allegedly violated environmental laws from 2014 – 2025. About $160,000 in investigation and enforcement costs are also being imposed.
The Downieville Gas Mart allegedly spilled 52 gallons of fuel, and the incident reportedly occurred after complaints were filed. Also, the owners were notified of significant violations related to the underground storage tanks by the river.
Plus, the Main Street station failed to obtain and maintain operating permits for underground storage tanks. The 5th & L Mart failed to keep spill containers free of debris and liquid.
One gallon of fuel can contaminate up to a million gallons of water. It leads to environmental harm and is a danger to wildlife.
The station in Downieville has replaced its four single-walled underground tanks with double-walled ones. So, drivers can feel better about filling up there.
Also, the district attorney’s offices in Yolo and Sierra shared, “It’s important to protect fresh water resources and ensure all businesses follow the law.”
