Mazda has earned a great deal of success with its lineup of crossover SUVs, with models like the CX-3, CX-30, and CX-5. Its base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, while the available 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generates 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. Also, a hybrid powertrain may be offered for the CX-50 at a later date.

The CX-50 has a five-passenger seating capacity. It has a similar dashboard design as other Mazda models, along with a touchscreen that can be controlled via a knob on the center console.
