The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V helped pioneer the compact SUV segment decades ago — and they are still going strong many years later. There are multiple reasons for their success, and one of the biggest is their high-level reliability. However, what SUV lasts longer, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 or the 2023 Honda CR-V?

Drivers are often drawn to vehicles with the freshest look and the most advanced technologies. However, there’s something appealing about owning a vehicle that can last a long time. A vehicle is a major investment, so it’s ideal to get one that can be on the road for many miles.

What about the 2023 Toyota RAV4 and the 2023 Honda CR-V? Both benefit from a legendary reputation for high-level reliability from Toyota and Honda. The two Japanese automakers build very dependable vehicles. However, according to a study from iSeeCars, the CR-V lasts longer. It has a greater chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

For the study, iSeeCars listed the top 23 vehicles that have the greatest chance of hitting the 250K-mile mark. And the only two compact SUVs to earn a spot on the list are the CR-V and the discontinued Honda Element.

However, the RAV4 didn’t earn a spot on the longest-lasting list. There are other Toyota SUVs on the list, including the midsize 4Runner and full-size Land Cruiser and Sequoia — but not the RAV4.

The CR-V has a 27.5% chance of lasting 250,000 miles. This is more than double the average for all vehicles. The Element is marginally better for compact SUVs — at 27.8%. However, there’s another Honda SUV that tops them all: the midsize Pilot (42.7%).

The better results for the longest-lasting study suggest that the 2023 Honda CR-V is more reliable than the 2023 Toyota RAV4. Also, based on dependability analysis from J.D. Power, the CR-V is slightly better.

J.D. Power gave the Honda compact SUV a reliability rating of 82/100. And the RAV4 achieved a score of 81/100. Both scores are considered “great” on J.D. Power’s dependability scale, but the CR-V is a little better. According to the data analytics company, a higher score shows fewer incidents of design flaws, malfunctions, and defects. Generally speaking, on average, there are not as many problems.

Toyota RAV4 vs. Honda CR-V: What costs more to repair?

Another consideration is the cost of repairs. RepairPal also rates the Honda CR-V higher than the Toyota RAV4 for reliability (4.5/5 vs. 4.0/5). And because it’s more reliable, the cost of repairs is slightly lower for the Honda compact SUV.

The average annual repair cost for the CR-V is $407, compared to $429 for the RAV4. Both vehicles have lower repair costs than the $521 average for compact SUVs and $652 for all types of vehicles, but the CR-V is marginally cheaper.

Each individual vehicle varies per compact SUV owner. However, as a whole, the 2023 Honda CR-V is more likely to last longer than the 2023 Toyota RAV4. On top of that, it’s slightly more reliable with lower repair costs.
