Last week, North Carolina deputies were led on a high-speed chase after police located a reported stolen vehicle. The driver of the vehicle failed to pull over during an attempted traffic stop. Police eventually caught and arrested an 18-year-old suspect after he finally stopped and attempted to flee on foot in Durham.

The 18-year-old driver reportedly reached 100 miles per hour as he led police on a pursuit. The chase took the officers onto I-40, I-885, NC-147, and the surface streets of Durham. He is accused of stealing a 2017 Kia Sorento, which he later crashed.

WRAL News helicopter Sky 5 tracked parts of the chase, including the arrest. The helicopter video showed police vehicles chasing a black SUV and two people through Durham. Near the end of the chase, the camera caught one man running through a parking lot and into the woods.

Numerous police cars arrived at the scene in a neighborhood, and some officers drew their guns. Around 10 minutes later, police took two men into custody.

The teen driver now faces a multitude of charges

The 18-year-old who led police on the chase was charged with fleeing to elude arrest and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He also faces charges of hit and run – leaving the scene, reckless driving to endanger, resisting a public officer, driving without a license, and possessing stolen goods/property. He was granted a $50,000 bond, but must wear an ankle monitor at least until his next court date.

“Having the pursuit [can be] a bigger danger than letting it go,” said Wake County Sheriff’s Office Field Services Chief Tony Godwin. “And sometimes, people’s driving is such that we really got to get this person stopped because allowing them to continue on is a bigger threat than the danger and having a pursuit.

“We wish we were to a place where we didn’t have them, and it wasn’t necessary, but as long as people continue to violate the law and break the law and put people in danger, we have a responsibility to put a stop to that before somebody gets hurt.”

Three high-speed chases occurred in the area last Wednesday. A second chase also occurred in Durham, while another took place in Knightdale.
