This man goes viral for revealing how a stock 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser sells for $170,000.

Spending $170,000 on a vehicle is not out of the ordinary. Typically this happens when buying a supercar or a high-end luxury vehicle. However, spending this amount of money on a stock SUV from the 90s is a rare situation.

In a TikTok that’s generated over 325,900 views as of this writing, Zachary Diehl (@zachary_diehl) shares what made this 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser so special and worth $170,000.

This 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser Selling Price Is Shocking

“I know you will not believe this, but this 1997 Toyota SUV just sold for $170,000,” Diehl begins.

Yep, that’s right, a bone stock 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser sells for $170,000. Now, this model starts MSRP $46,293 when new, Kelley Blue Book reports.

So what made this particular vehicle so special?

“Now the primary reason this sold for $170,000 is because it only has 4,700 miles on it and it’s completely unmodified,” Diehl reveals.

The fact this 80 series Land Cruiser has low mileage and isn’t modified is extremely rare.

“Those that aren’t familiar with the Land Cruiser 80 series, these are extremely reliable, extremely rugged, and still look very good for a 30 year old vehicle model,” Diehl shares.

There is no denying this is a high price to pay for a stock SUV. However, the 80 series Land Cruiser has earned a fantastic reputation and respect from the car community.

“The 80 series Land Cruisers are considered to be one of the greatest Toyota made SUV’s of all time,” Diehl reports.

“$170,000 is pretty steep, but an 80 series Land Cruiser might possibly be the best SUV ever made,” one TikTok commenter added.

Delhi reiterated on how these SUVs are incredibly basic with no bells or whistles. This 80 series is often referred to as the last great analog SUV the United States got.

“One being sold for $170,000 is nuts. What is even crazier is this is the 5th 80 series Land Cruiser to bring in more than $100,000,” Delhi shares.

“What’s the message here, three things. Car prices are insane, people have a lot of money, and buying an old Land Cruiser might actually be an appreciating asset,” Delhi concludes.

Commenters shared their love for the Toyota Land Cruiser

Many viewers have fond memories with their Toyota Land Cruiser and share their admiration in the comment section.

“We had this car and it was the GOAT. Drove it into the ground,” one TikTok commenter added.

“The 80 series Land Cruiser is the best vehicle I’ve owned and hasn’t let me down after 3+ years of daily driving and being a weekend warrior,” another commented.

“My dad regrets selling our red Land Cruiser from the late 80s every day, it was such a part of my childhood memories,” a third shared.

Other commenters chimed in mentioning the durability of the older Toyota models and how great these cars were.

“You’d think Toyota would see this and realize they need to go back in time when it comes to their vehicles,” one added.

“My dad has this exact car but with like 250k miles,” another says.

“Toyota and Honda, especially older models, are the only trustworthy vehicles to buy nowadays. They’re making all others break on purpose,” another mentions.

“I saw Toyota Land Cruiser with 300K miles on it v8 it was driving like new one,” one shares.

Why do Toyotas have such great resale values?

Every year Kelley Blue Book (KBB) releases their ranking for the cars with the best resale value. In 2025, Toyota had five car models featured on the top 10 list. This award is earned by the vehicles that do well retaining the original value of the purchase price when reselling.

This isn’t the first time Toyota has done well with the KBB list. KBB’s Best Resale Value Award has been given to Toyota eight times since 2014 including the past four consecutive years.

“Pricing and production discipline, a reputation for quality and durability and a few other factors keep these brands at the top,” per CNBC.

This focus on pricing, production, and durability has paid off.

Toyota has also done a great job listening to customers and putting them first. When designing and building new models, Toyota will consider the requests and feedback from customers, CNBC mentions.

By selling dependable and durable cars, Toyota has earned high praise from the car community and experts.
