Drum roll, please! The results about what life is like with the Mazda CX-90 PHEV for one whole year are in. There are plenty of positive things to say about life with this SUV. However, drivers also listed a few drawbacks.

The worst parts of owning a 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV for a year

The team at Edmunds bravely drove a 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV for a year to determine what life with this SUV is really like. The team racked up roughly 21,000 miles, while an average driver puts about 15,000 miles on their odometer annually.

Most complaints are related to the powertrain. The CX-90 PHEV is a plug-in hybrid, so it can run on gas and electricity. The 2.5-liter inline-four engine is paired with an electric motor to generate 323 hp and 396 lb-ft of torque.

According to drivers, the hybrid powertrain feels a bit clunky and rough. The transmission shifts aren’t as smooth as they are in rivals such as the Hyundai Tucson PHEV.

It gets an EPA-estimated gas range of 25 mpg with an electric range of up to 25 miles. With gas and electricity, it’s supposed to get 56 MPGe. But it has to constantly be plugged in to achieve those figures.

Other complaints involved the lack of touchscreen and lack of space for families. But the cargo space is excellent with the seats folded down.

Positives include how the Mazda CX-90 PHEV is fun and engaging to drive. Plus, it’s smooth, quiet, and comfortable for stress-free road trips. Also, it didn’t have any issues and only needed to visit the dealership for a routine oil change.
