Wooden bridge collapses under propane truck, sending it into a creek
David Hudnel has lived in Pennsylvania’s Lower Macungie Township region for many years. The Little Lehigh Creek winds through the town, and historic monuments dot the landscape. Including a wooden bridge that provided access for residents. Hudnel and his neighbors, however, refused to risk its integrity with the weight of modern cars—even though the bridge’s limit reads 10,000 lbs.
“None of us drive across the bridge, we just walk over it,” Hudnel told CBS Philadelphia.
Then, one day, the little town was in for quite the surprise when a young driver decided to take a 27,000 lb truck full of propane over the bridge. The wooden bridge collapsed before the truck could make it to the first supporting pillar, sending the truck into the creek.
Brad Landis, a neighbor, told reporters expressed shocked that the driver took that risky shortcut. Especially when other truckers tend to avoid the bridge.
“When heavy equipment goes through here, they come up [the main road] because of the bridge,” he said. “Perhaps they didn’t know about the weight limit.”
The truck didn’t lose any propane—but the driver will likely lose their job
Sharp Energy has its logo on the truck and told the outlet it’s fully cooperating with investigators. Police report the driver escaped injury and the truck’s seal held, but the collapse destroyed the bridge.
Heavy cranes were needed to lift the truck from the water. Residents lost power to their homes for several hours, and residents who live across the bridge won’t have a convenient way to cross for quite some time.
“For the conservancy [of the bridge] and for the few people who live across it, it’s likely to be a huge inconvenience,” Hudnel said.
Now the company may face fines for exceeding the limit
The driver’s ignorance of the bridge’s weight limit will be hard to claim, as a sign is posted just before the entrance. State Trooper Nathan Branosky told WFMZ that the driver or the company (or both) may face charges and fines for blatantly exceeding the limit.
