Wisconsin Man Claiming to Be Jesus Steals Squad Car, Leads Police on Hours-Long Series of Pursuits
A 27-year-old Wisconsin man claiming to be Jesus stole a squad car and led police officers on a series of pursuits before finally being captured. Wauwatosa police recently released body camera footage showing some of the bizarre encounter.
The police say the series of strange events began just before 4 a.m. near an Oak Creek motel. Officers were responding to an altercation there when they learned the man had an open warrant.
“He put his hands on me. He thinks he is Jesus,” the woman said in a police bodycam recording obtained from Oak Creek police by WISN News.
Jesus led Wisconsin police on multiple chases
When the police officers attempted to arrest the man, he told them that his name was Jesus then fled in a Dodge Caravan. About an hour and 45 minutes later, police say the same man tried to steal a television from a Walmart in Brown Deer. When confronted by police, he reportedly fled again.
Around 10 a.m. that same day, police officers responded to a disturbance near Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa. Officers once again spotted the suspect getting into the Dodge Caravan. When they activated their lights and sirens, he fled for a third time.
When police finally boxed the suspect in, he exited the minivan and hopped into a police squad car. He then allegedly backed up into three officers and took off again.
Eventually, officers caught up to him again when he crashed the squad car, leading to a foot chase (the fifth police pursuit of the suspect). During that chase, he was finally caught and arrested.
Jesus faces multiple charges and a lengthy prison sentence
Four officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and released later that day. The suspect was charged with nine felony counts, including fleeing in a motor vehicle, recklessly endangering safety in the first degree, carjacking, and fleeing in a motor vehicle resulting in property damage and bodily harm. He was also charged with misdemeanor attempted theft.
He also has other open cases in Waukesha County. A doctor is scheduled to file a report on March 26 with an assessment of his competency.
