One second, Cletis Reed was in his backyard in Laughlin, Nevada, thinking about climbing into his hot tub. The next, a car was flying over his pool wall.

The crash happened the night of December 15 and was all caught on video.

Police say the driver was speeding, failed to stop, and slammed into a block wall. That impact sent the car rotating through the air. It clipped the roof of Reed’s pool house, then kept going.

The driver ejected and landed in the shallow end of the pool

Reed heard what he described as a freight train and rushed outside. His patio was destroyed. Debris was everywhere. And the driver, a woman, was floating in his pool.

The timing still rattles the homeowner

Reed said he had just popped the cover on his hot tub, which sat next to the wall that collapsed. He stepped away for a moment to talk to his wife.

Seconds later, the patio came down. Had he stayed put, he believes he would not have survived.

The pool itself could have saved the driver’s life. The shallow end is only about waist deep, surrounded by block walls. Reed said she landed just feet from solid concrete.

He pulled her from the water while she drifted face up, then briefly slipped under. She was conscious, moaning, and responsive. About 15 minutes later, she was standing and speaking with police.

The car ended up wedged deep in the backyard. A tow truck could not simply hook and pull it. Crews had to bring in a crane to lift it out.

The damage is extensive

Reed says he poured his retirement savings into the resort-style backyard. The patio is gone. The 25,000-gallon pool is contaminated with motor oil. He estimates repairs near $300,000 and expects the pool cleaning will include fully draining it.

We’re not sure if the driver was impaired, and while she was standing and speaking to authorities, she could have injuries that weren’t disclosed. Responders took her to a local hospital. Fox 5 Las Vegas says records show prior traffic violations.
