Walmart Sam’s Club pouring diesel from gas pumps strands motorists
If you buy your gasoline from Walmart’s “Sam’s Club” you’ll want to hear about this fuel mix-up. If you don’t know, Sam’s Club is Walmart’s members-only loyalty club–similar to Costco. And like Costco, many locations also have gas pumps and discounted fuel. One location in Saint Clairsville Ohio suffered a gasoline/diesel mixup.
Barb Eiben explained the situation on Facebook. “My brother-in-law bought gas at Sams today. Went to go home this eve from our home in St. C and his truck will not start.”
Other drivers chimed in in the comments, with the exact same problem. Eiben explained, “His new truck is in our driveway and will have to be towed to be repaired. I pray that Sams will take care of this problem.”
What happens when a Walmart Sam’s Club pump fills your gasoline truck with diesel?
Long story short, a gasoline engine cannot burn diesel fuel. Mix a bit of diesel fuel in with gasoline and your engine may just run very poorly. But fill your tank with diesel exclusively and the engine won’t be able to operate at all.
A mechanic will need to drain your fuel tank. But they’ll also need to flush the fuel injection system. At best. you’re looking at a complex and timely procedure. But at worst, your fuel ignition system is damaged and you’ll need to pay to replace expensive components.
The problem reportedly occurred when a third-party supplier delivered both diesel and gasoline, pumping the respective fuels into the wrong tanks. Sam’s Club director of corporate communications said, “We are actively working to address this situation and are dedicated to making things right for out affected members. We strongly encourage them to contact the club directly to submit a claim.” It looks like Eiben’s prayers have been answered.
This isn’t the first such issue at a Sam’s Club. In April 2023, an Arkansas Sam’s Club suffered an identical mix-up. You can see the aftermath of that fuel issue in the video below:
