Your rearview camera’s most important job? Turning on when you hit reverse. Not going dark. Unfortunately, that’s what might happen in 413,151 Volvos, leading to the automaker’s latest recall.

The following vehicles are affected:

  • S60 (2021–2025)
  • V60 (2021–2025)
  • V60 Cross Country (V60CC) (2021–2025)
  • S90 (2021–2025)
  • V90 (2022–2025)
  • V90 Cross Country (V90CC) (2021–2025)
  • XC60 (2021–2025)
  • XC90 (2021–2025)
  • XC40 (2021–2025)
  • C40 Recharge (2022–2025)
  • EX40 (2021–2025)
  • EC40 (2021–2025)

Volvo’s recall bulletin says the “rear-view camera image may not show during the start of each backing event.” You read that right. The camera could glitch right when you need it most. Volvo admitted, “limited access to the rear-view camera increases the risk of a crash.” It’s a software issue. The fix? “Volvo Cars will perform a software upgrade.”

This recall covers a full fleet of 2021 to 2025 models: S60, V60, S90, V90, XC60, XC90, XC40, C40, EX40, and EC40. If your vehicle is running older code, you’re in the danger zone. “If the vehicle has 3.4.5 or older, your vehicle is affected by this recall and must be updated.” The corrected version? “The corrective software version is 3.5.14.”

So far, “Volvo Cars centrally has not received any reports alleging injuries, fatalities, or crashes related to this condition.” But the glitch is real, and the risk is no joke.

What to do next if you’re part of this Volvo recall

The fix is free. “All work performed under this recall is free of charge to the owner.” You can update at the dealership or sometimes even over the air.

Considering buying a used Volvo? Heads up. “It is a violation of Federal law for a retailer to deliver any new Volvo that is eligible for a recall.” So hopefully the used car dealer will double check the software before your test drive.

Volvo says, “Retailers are advised to check all vehicles in inventory for recall eligibility and repair immediately.” You’ll get a heads-up soon. “An owner notification will be sent out on or about June 24th, 2025.”

Want to check now? “Vehicle eligibility can be confirmed in TIE using the ‘Vehicle Info’ tab and entering the VIN.”
