With the holiday season rapidly approaching, a lot of UPS delivery drivers are ramping up to meet increased demands. Many customers are ordering pricey gifts like laptops, iPads, or smartwatches, to have them delivered to their loved ones.

Eliu Abraham Chaves, a South LA homeowner, ordered a new Apple Watch for his wife as a Christmas gift. However, the delivery notification made Chavez suspicious when he couldn’t find the watch anywhere.

Suspecting a porch pirate, Chavez checked his security cameras and caught the UPS driver inspecting the package, opening it, pocketing the watch, and tossing the empty package into his neighbor’s trash.

To make sure he wasn’t seeing things, he checked his neighbor’s bin and saw the package for the watch.

“I got frustrated,” he told ABC 7. “I got really upset to see what he had done.”

The UPS driver wasn’t alone

Chavez noticed while watching the thief steal the watch that there was another employee in the truck. It looked as though the thief tried to be careful to avoid being seen by the other employee.

“If it happened to me, maybe it happened to a lot more people,” he said. “He may be stealing from other people in the area.”

Chavez contacted the store he bought the watch from and the UPS to report the theft. The UPS informed Chavez and outlet reporters the employee no longer works for the company, and his actions are not reflective of the company’s core values.

Chavez ordered a replacement, and this time, they’ll be picking it up.
