Have you ever felt nervous while driving through a tunnel? I get it. Drivers are going pretty fast through a claustrophobic space in the dark. One truck driver lost control in an interstate tunnel, causing a multiple-vehicle crash and fires.

Truck driver loses control in I-80 tunnel, causing fiery crashes

Police officers in Wyoming explained that a chain reaction of fiery crashes occurred in an I-80 tunnel after a pickup truck lost control.

During snowy conditions, the Toyota truck driver hit a slippery patch of ice while exiting a tunnel near Green River, Wyoming. The incident occurred in the westbound tube of the twin tunnel under Castle Rock.

He spun and hit a guardrail before stooping. According to Wyoming News, the truck was blocking traffic.  Other cars then had to try and avoid hitting the truck. A tractor-trailer jackknifed and blocked both lanes of traffic about 200 feet from the tunnel’s exit.

Then a Ram truck hit the semi-truck and another trucker hit the Ram. The pile-up led to a mass of vehicles hitting the Toyota truck and another vehicle outside of the tunnel.

Sadly, the folks in the Ram truck died on impact. Then the truck caught on fire, killing a driver trapped inside one of the semi-trucks. This incident led to the deaths of three people. Twenty others had injuries that ranged from minor to severe.

Police officers, first responders, and firefighters were on the scene for hours, making rescues, treating injuries, and cleaning up the charred mess full of twisted metal. It’s unclear if the tunnel has been reopened.
