Truck hits train, leaves engine in PA woman’s yard—now it’s the ‘best lawn ornament ever’
Jody Shockey, a property and home owner in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, has train tracks in her front yard. She loved standing in the kitchen and watching trains go back and forth at the edge of her property. Seven weeks ago, a tri-axle truck collided with a CSX cargo train, causing quite the crash.
“I was in the kitchen, and the kitchen faces the train tracks. There was a loud noise and I looked out the window. I said to my husband, ‘John, the train’s embedded into our yard.’ There was a fire shooting out of the top of it,” Shockey told WJAC. “So, I called 911 right away.”
Crews took several days to clear the debris and repair the tracks. Trains are back on schedule, but no one ever picked up the engine.
Friends and neighbors come to see the engine
Instead of balking, Shockey embraced the engine on her property. Friends and neighbors have, too. Shockey decorated the engine and surrounded it with potted flowers to liven it up.
“Everybody slows down and looks at it. We’ve had a lot of people in our yard and a lot of people have asked to take pictures,” she said. ” We had two railroad enthusiasts from Reading who drove the whole way up here to take pictures and see what it was down in the yard. So it’s been quite interesting.”
Shockey’s son, Dustin, visits his mother frequently. He’s come to love the engine in the yard, too.
“I would label it more as interesting than cumbersome. As nice as [CSX has] treated everybody, and as well as it’s all gone, I would not label it as a problem,” he said. “I think that everything was fine. Accidents happen.”
The train company promised to remove it
Despite Shockey’s adoption of the engine, CSX, the owner of the engine, promised to remove the engine on Sunday, May 4. The process was laborious, mandating a seven-hour power outage and road blocks to ensure it’s safely lifted and carried away.
Viewers of FOX56’s coverage of the story hinted they’d love a train engine in their yard.
“A whole GP40-2 as a lawn ornament, I thought I’d never see the day,” wrote a viewer. “Best lawn ornament ever.”
Another viewer joked that Dustin’s mom may have misunderstood him wanting a specific car.
“‘You said you wanted a Jeep, well, I’ve got you a Geep!'” they wrote.
Someone else wrote they felt refreshed by the fact that Shockey embraced the engine.
“Incredible to hear of folks not raising all kinds of heck about it,” they wrote. “Very pleasant folks making the best of unfortunate circumstances.”
