A majority of drivers love Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Cars without these services are often considered to be dealbreakers. Good thing Toyota SUVs are leaning into the hype. These vehicles could gain support for Car Keys.

Toyota SUVs could get the Apple Car Keys feature

Drivers have been outraged by the news of automakers like General Motors making the decision to drop Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some folks refuse to buy a Tesla model because it doesn’t include this software.

But Toyota SUVs are going in a different direction. According to Mac Rumors, Apple is preparing to provide support for the Car Keys feature in Toyota vehicles.

Many Toyota cars already have an in-house version of the Digital Key feature that’s becoming increasingly popular among automotive brands.

It’s bundled in the available Remote Connect package, which lets drivers use their Smartphone as a key to access the vehicle. Most new vehicles include a free subscription to the service package for a year. Then it costs between $15 – $20 per month based on your plan.

But there’s no monthly fee for Apple Car Keys as the feature can be added to your Apple Wallet. Unlocking car doors can be completed by holding an Apple Watch or iPhone by the NFC reader on the door handle.

The feature is ready to go on Apple’s end, so Toyota could be ready to add it soon. Currently, BMW, Genesis, Kia, Hyundai, Lotus, Mercedes, and Volvo offer Car Keys support.

But on a more exciting note, the next version of Apple CarPlay may include remote start, eliminating even more subscription costs.
