Uh oh, drivers are upset with Toyota again. It’s no secret that the new generations of certain trucks and SUVs haven’t lived up to the hype of the reputation of older models. But the automaker continues to make bold choices that fans are disappointed with.

Toyota fans are upset by the new 4Runner

First, we saw the third-generation Toyota Tundra arrive in 2023. Drivers were upset with the truck because it dropped the reliable V8 engine for a twin-turbo V6 and a hybrid option. Plus, it arrived with quality issues.

Then the third-generation Toyota Sequoia has similar issues. There is less cargo space than before, and the seats don’t fold flat to create a level cargo floor. Also, you need special aftermarket tools to remove the third row.

People seem pretty happy with the latest Toyota Tacoma, though. So, that’s one redesign the automaker nailed for now. However, the truck is much bigger than before, despite not providing extra rear passenger space.

According to Torque News, the redesigned Toyota 4Runner is being met with complaints and disappointment. Drivers complain that they feel like it has less head space for taller people.

Also, they don’t like the large touchscreen and the added tech that could lead to more maintenance problems. Some are upset because the rear seats don’t fold flat. The interior has been met with resistance as it feels cheap with more plastic materials compared to the outgoing models.

Despite having a new hybrid powertrain, the fuel economy has hardly improved. Plus, drivers loved the bullet-proof V6 engine that is one of the most reliable units in history. They don’t trust the new four-cylinder engine or eight-speed automatic transmission.

The sixth-generation just launched in 2025, though. It’s a little early to see how well it will hold up. I personally loved the TRD model I reviewed for a week, but I also enjoy the fifth-generation and can’t afford either one.
