Tow company demands $2k to return mover’s vehicle, instantly regrets it
Many drivers have a bad story about a shady tow truck company trying to take advantage of them. But when one mover had their work vehicle nabbed by a tow company, they got sweet revenge. By abandoning the vehicle.
A Redditor explained, “I was driving a beat up 95 jeep for work.” A noble SUV, but not worth a ton. And that’s going to be important later in our story.
So what were they doing on the job? ” I was moving stuff for work one day and I had a coca cola provided refrigerator inside.” By Coca-Cola-provided, the driver presumably means the refrigerated display cases that Coca-Cola loans out to various stores.
“I stopped by to get some lunch between transfers and my car got stolen.”
That’s a pretty bad work day. But it looks like the thieves decided they didn’t want it and abandoned it. “Some tow company found it and called me a few days later asking me for 2 thousand dollars to get the car back with it’s contents.”
So the towing company, which had come into possession of stolen property somehow, was trying to charge thousands to return said property back.
That’s an awfully steep fee for a single tow. Especially when the driver wasn’t present to consent to the tow. The driver asked his boss what to do. “The owner didn’t want it back and neither did I.” Presumably, Coca-Cola wasn’t too upset about its display case going missing. So the driver told the tow company, “Nah, I’m good.” That’ when things go interesting.
He admits, “I knew that they couldn’t sell the refrigerator.” Why? It was the property of Coca-Cola. Besides, any store that wanted a similar refrigerator could just call the soda company and get a loaner. In addition, the freon gas in a refrigerator is hazardous enough that dumps charge a hefty surcharge to dispose of the appliance.
“A few days later once they found out the same, they called me begging me to take the car back with the refrigerator and they only asked me for 200 bucks.” What did the driver and his boss say? “Screw tow truck companies.” You can see the original post embedded below:
