Are you looking for a way to keep your new car smelling great? You’re in good company: Hundreds of TikTokers liked, bookmarked, and shared a “quick and easy hack” to customize your car’s scent.

Obviously, you can buy a regular car air freshener in an auto parts store. But the Bumper.com VIN check website’s official TikTok asks, “What’s another way to get that fresh air scent in your car if you’re not into Little Trees or air vent clip-ons?”

Keep your car smelling fresh with perfume or cologne on your cabin air filter

The TikTok tip warns that you’ll “need to access your cabin air filter.” Lucky for you, most automakers place the cabin air filter directly behind the glovebox. You either open the glovebox all the way or unclip it and hinge it out of the way. Then you should have access to the filter’s cover or built-in housing.

Sounds like a pain? This isn’t a bad maintenance procedure to know anyway. It’s usually quick and easy to check the status of your air filter periodically and replace it when necessary.

Here’s the hack part. Bumper.com adds that if you spray down the body of the air filter with your favorite perfume or cologne, then reinstall it, you’ll scent the air coming out of the HVAC system. “Close that glove box. Blast that AC for a cool minute. Take a deep breath, and you have brought the freshness.”

Commenters were quick to point out that perfume and cologne are formulated to release a strong scent for just a few hours. “That only works for 5–10 minutes…get u dryer sheet.” I agree that a dryer sheet will likely freshen up a car for longer. That said, the air freshener hack might be nice for some short-term variety in how your car smells. Or, if you’re tuning up your sweetie’s car, a spray of cologne or perfume they’ve said they like on the air filter might be a thoughtful surprise.
