Thieves Stole a Bunch of New Stellantis Trucks and SUVs From a Detroit Storage Lot by Simply Crashing Through a Fence
Brazen thieves broke into a Stellantis storage lot in Detroit and stole several trucks and SUVs by simply crashing through a fence. The storage lot is located near the Detroit Assembly Complex – Jefferson Stellantis plant.
The Detroit Police Department said the thefts occurred around 3 a.m. on Wednesday. The thieves reportedly stole several Ram pickup trucks, Jeep SUVs, and Dodge Durangos from the temporary storage lot. It is unclear how the thieves accessed the lot.
According to local residents, crimes like this are far too common
“That’s so scary, man. The police have to do something about it, man,” Nirmarjat Singh told CBS News. “All over here is a bad area, man. They’re stealing all the time.”
“This is one of those areas where violence and car theft is major,” said Setrice Thurman.
“They should have extra security the way things are around here, but it’s just unfortunate because there’s so many businesses taking losses, there’s no way that we can build in this city if it keeps getting torn down,” she continued.
The thieves reportedly committed the vehicle thefts quickly and left behind a giant hole in the fence. A witness captured footage of the scene just moments after the thieves crashed through the fence.
Stellantis and the Detroit police are keeping pretty mum on the crime
According to CBS News, the Detroit Police Department said they were not sure exactly how many Stellantis vehicles thieves had stolen, but reports place it at around 12. Officers recovered one of the vehicles after finding it left behind, stuck in the snow.
The automaker, however, provided a statement when asked to comment on the crime.
“Stellantis is working with the Detroit Police Department regarding the theft of several vehicles from a lot managed by a third party near the Detroit Assembly Complex – Jefferson,” the company said. “As this is an open investigation, the company is not providing any additional details on this incident.”
