Maybe the Kia Boyz should change their name to the Chevrolet dudes. While Kia and Hyundai models have been in the news due to being easy to steal, the Chevy Silverado has been under the radar as a more popular target. More trucks were stolen in 2024 than Kia cars.

Thieves target the Chevy Silverado more than Kia models

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released some interesting information about vehicles stolen in 2024. On one positive note, overall car theft is down.

In 2024, the amount of vehicles stolen across America dropped to 850,708 from 1,020,729 in 2023. That’s a year-over-year decrease of 17%. For the first time since 2021, vehicular theft has dropped under 1 million.

However, the Chevy Silverado became popular to target. It’s the third most stolen vehicle in America and it’s the only truck that ranks in the list of the top five most popular models to steal.

In 2024, thieves stole about 21,666 Silverado trucks. The Hyundai Elantra is the most popular car to steal with 31,712 thefts, followed by the Hyundai Sonata at 26,720. The Honda Accord landed in fourth place with 18,539 thefts, and the Kia Optima was stolen about 17,493 times.

According to GM Authority, Maine was the only state to see an increase in theft with a 2% increase. Also, Washington D.C. has the highest rate of theft.

The Chevy Silverado might be a popular target because it’s easier than other vehicles to steal. Thieves can quickly get away with them. Plus, they’re valuable among secondary markets and easy to part out.
