Police officers are urging drivers to be aware of this new trend. Thieves are using an old-fashioned item to steal cars. They don’t even have to physically break into your vehicle, unlock the doors, and quickly drive away. 

Thieves use ancient tech to steal cars 

Orange County police officers are warning drivers across the nation about a new method thieves are using to steal cars in 30 seconds or less. 

This technique involves ancient technology, known as antennas. They can be taken from old radios and TVs to get away with modern vehicles. Everything from economy lemons to high-end luxury rides. 

Criminals may approach your vehicle if it’s parked near your home and wave an antenna in the air. This allows them to steal the signal from your vehicle’s key fob. 

As a result, they can easily unlock the doors and start the engine. This method is referred to as a relay attack and works with vehicles that have a push-button start. 

According to CBS News, you can protect your vehicle by placing the key fobs in signal-blocking bags. Wrapping them in tin foil or using aluminum baggies also works. Plus, it’s best to keep your keys away from the front door or windows. 

Police officers recommend always locking your car doors. It’s helpful to park in well-lit areas and within range of security cameras. Consider slowing thieves down with steering wheel locks or wheel locks. 

The amount of time it takes to steal cars plays a factor in successful thefts. Plus, thieves will want to keep quiet to avoid detection.
