In December 2024, Chicagoan Kate Steinberg made her way on stage from Bidder’s Row to give Drew Carey a great big hug. She’d play “Money Game” on “The Price Is Right” – the one where contestants guess a full retail price to win small amounts of cash…and a new car.

Chigaoan nearly misses her shot at a new Nissan Versa

While Steinberg’s first two-digit guess reveals the front end of a car illustration, her next two turns whiff on finding the back half.

On her fourth, anxiety-ridden attempt…it’s a win.

Steinberg falls to the ground before shooting up and sprinting to the Nissan Versa.

“The Price Is Right” lets winners decide what to do with new car prizes

If contestants want to keep the car featured on the show, they’re welcome to. However, the model they’ll actually end up with usually comes from a dealership, not the show itself. The winners also have to pay tax on their win…an expense many winners aren’t prepared to shell out.

A second option is taking the retail value of the vehicle as a cash payout. You’d also have to pay tax on the winnings. The taxes can just come right out of the payout, though. Many show contestants opt for this since they won’t be saddled with unexpected vehicle ownership costs and can use the money however they choose.

There’s also a third way to claim your prize. After Steinberg’s “pinch me” moment on “The Price Is Right,” the reality of Nissan Versa ownership sank in. “You can keep that car, or you can take that credit and get a new car,” she tells followers. “So that’s what I did.”

Contestant ditches the show’s Nissan Versa for a Toyota RAV4

The 2024 Nissan Versa is a subcompact sedan. Steinberg correctly guessed its retail price, around $19,000. Rather than keep it, the “The Price Is Right” contestant decided to use that retail value to help herself adopt a Toyota RAV4.

Steinberg picks up her Toyota SUV at what appears to be a Nissan dealership. It’s possible the dealership had it on trade on offered it to Steinberg, although she doesn’t disclose the exact process.
