It’s finally happening! The Mazda CX-50 is gaining a hybrid engine! This is the only thing that this popular SUV is missing. On an interesting note, the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid is borrowing Toyota’s tech. 

The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid shares parts with Toyota 

A few Japanese auto manufacturers have been working together to make things like the upcoming Mazda CX-50 Hybrid possible. 

For example, Toyota and Mazda share a factory in Alabama where the Toyota Corolla Cross and Mazda CX-50 are manufactured. 

Toyota and Subaru collaborated on the zB4X and Solterra EVs. Now they’re making three more electric vehicles together. 

Now the CX-50 hybrid models will be borrowing parts from Toyota. This is a good thing because Toyota is known for manufacturing reliable hybrid powertrains. 

But the excitement doesn’t end there, because the Mazda is developing a hybrid powertrain for the Mazda CX-5 as well. 

The CX-50 Hybrid is expected to debut by the end of the year, but the Mazda CX-5 Hybrid won’t arrive until the next generation launches. 

Because the Corolla Cross Hybrid and CX-50 share a plant, they may get the same powertrain. The Corolla Cross Hybrid uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with three electric motors to generate 196 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque. 

The Corolla Cross Hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.3 seconds. But the CX-50 is a bit more muscular than the Corolla Cross, so it could get more power. 

The RAV4 Hybrid pumps out 219 hp and CX-50 HEV uses the same powertrain setup in China. It could be a preview of what’s coming to America next. 

Currently, the most potent CX-50 engine is a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with up to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.2 seconds. 

Reportedly, more information about the CX-50 will be released in June, so stay tuned for updates
