The Allstate insurance company just released its annual survey of the safest and most dangerous cities in the U.S. It examined how often the average driver in America’s 200 most populous cities will make a claim for a vehicle collision. The national average is once every 10.56 years. But two cities in Texas made the top 10 safest. Four Texas cities made the top 20. Here’s the breakdown.

4 of the safest cities for drivers are in Texas

What exactly does this data mean? Simply put, Allstate receives the fewest claims per capita for these 20 cities. Four of them are in Texas (Corpus Christi, McAllen, Laredo, and Brownsville). The first place city–Brownsville–is a seaport on the Mexican border with a total metro area population of approximately 400k residents.

Could this data mean Allstate isn’t especially popular in Texas? Possibly. But with a 10% market share across the country, regional variations probably don’t impact the results a ton.

So could it mean that Texans tend to fix their cars themselves instead of making an insurance claim? Again, that could impact the results a bit. But Brownsville’s data is so exceptional, it likely still reflects a lower accident rate than elsewhere.

According to Allstate’s calculations, the average Brownsville driver goes 14.24 years between filing insurance claims. But not all of Texas is like Brownsville. In fact, five hours away is a state highway with one of the highest speed limits on the planet.

Texas State Highway 130 is a privately owned toll road. It was named after U.S. Congressman J.J. “Jake” Pickle. The Pickle Parkway allows drivers to circumvent Austin traffic. Its builders decided to experiment with the highest speed limit in the United States: 85 mph. In fact, only three roads with posted speed limits are faster. Poland, Bulgaria, and Abu Dhabi all have their own 140 km/hour highway, which translates to 85 mph.
