This may be the most “Texas” story I have ever written up. DoorDash drivers probably don’t expect delivering sandwiches will turn into a showdown straight out of the Wild West. But that’s exactly what happened on a dusty Texas backroad when Matthew found himself staring down men on horseback—and the barrel of a gun.

Here’s his story: “I run into a long line of cars. The holdup is these three cowboys on horses,” Matthew told KPRC 2. “It’s clear to me they are looking to start trouble.” Matthew had been heading to make a delivery in Fort Bend County, Texas, when he came across the riders blocking both lanes. Cars were already inching into the ditch to get around, but the horsemen wouldn’t budge. “They tell me to shut my b—- a– up.”

When the drivers ahead of him managed to squeeze past, Matthew tried his luck too. That’s when things turned dangerous. “One of them dismounts off their horse. Another rider got to my right and blocked me off. And then the guy who gets off in front of me said he was going to pop me.” And then he pulled out a gun and pointed it at Matthew’s head.

Matthew floored it, off the road, and past the cowboys. “That’s when I hear like—it basically sounded like an explosion.” The sound was a bullet, tearing through his trunk and ricocheting toward his back seat.

“The round… going through a strong pan, headed right toward my back,” he explained. Miraculously, the bullet hit a frying pan Matthew’s aunt had given him. The cookware bouncing around in his car slowed the bullet down, so it pierced the rear seat back, but stopped on the rear seat cushion right behind Matthew’s seat. “There’s a hole in the cushion right here,” Matthew said, showing reporters the impact in his back seat. “But luckily it didn’t make it into me.”

Still shaking, Matthew finished his delivery. The customer was understanding, but when DoorDash discovered he was three hours late, they opened an investigation and threatened to fire him.

Not knowing what else to do, Matthew posted the story of his close call online that night. Reddit blew up. Comments ranged from disbelief to outrage. “That’s attempted murder,” one user wrote. Another joked, “Do NOT call these people cowboys.” Someone even pointed out “They didn’t mention the three missing horses in the same area?” The buzz got so loud that KPRC 2’s Gage Golding reached out for an interview.

“Feel like somebody had my back,” Matthew told the reporter. “I didn’t even understand the night when the cop that found the bullet was like—you’re really lucky.” That said, the DoorDash driver was lucky, but furious. “Didn’t seem very well thought out on his end, which is why I want him caught,” Matthew said. “Because without any repercussions, it’s obviously likely he’s going to do something like that again.”

The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating. Meanwhile, Matthew is pushing for justice—and sharing his story so no one else ends up in the crosshairs. Watch the full interview with Matthew and KPRC 2 embedded below:
