Texas mom faces charges for driving with kids on the roof
On April 23, Nicole Duncan was heading to her home in Houston, Texas, after finishing her shift as a CPS worker. As she was leaving the agency’s parking lot, she saw something that truly shocked her: three young kids sitting on top of an SUV driven by Yenina Gonon Conde.
“I could see somebody hanging on top of the car,” Conde told KHOU, noting the SUV was traveling at about 40 mph. “I literally saw their feet hanging through the sunroof. I saw somebody lean over as they were turning because the car didn’t stop.”
Duncan tried to get the driver’s attention by following the SUV, waving at Conde, and honking.
“I think I caught up with them like maybe a half a mile up,” she recalled. “And I started honking and that’s when she slowed down a little bit, enough for me to get on the side of her and try to tell her to pull over.”
The nonchalant mother just kept driving with her kids on the roof
Duncan told reporters that she followed Conde for four miles. Within that time, she called the police. When Conde finally pulled over, Duncan confronted the mother. Even then, she said, she seemed unfazed.
“I started asking, like ‘What were you thinking?’ Like, ‘What happened?’ and she was like, ‘I didn’t. The kids wanted to get up there, and I didn’t see anything wrong with it,'” she said.
As a CPS worker, she deals with a lot of abuse, but this was a new one for her. She told the outlet that she wasn’t acting as a CPS worker, but as a concerned mother.
“As a parent, your job is to make sure that your kids are safe, and you know, even if your kid thought that it was OK, as a parent, you’re supposed to have more protective capacities than that,” said Duncan. “You’re supposed to say no.”
Police arrested Conde and pressed charges
After Duncan’s call, police arrived and took Conde into custody. Her trial resulted in three counts of child endangerment. CPS is investigating Conde, but they haven’t assigned the case to Duncan.
Duncan says another worker took the case and confirms the children are staying with family.
