Everyone has seen how poorly the Tesla Cybertruck is performing. Plummeting sales are leaving storage lots full of the trucks that arrived with multiple problems. Its failure could be pushing Elon Musk away from EVs as he discontinues flagship models.

After the Tesla Cybertruck flops, Elon Musk discontinues important EVs

I would have expected the Tesla Cybertruck to get discontinued instead of two better selling EVs. But this could be the beginning of the end for all Tesla vehicles.

Elon Musk has decided to discontinue the Tesla Model S and Model X. Production of the luxury electric car and SUV will end in the spring. The EVs are being cut so Musk can convert the factory in Fremont California, where they’re built, into an Optimus Robot Factory.

According to USA Today, the Model S and X don’t do nearly as well as the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. But one car did worse than the Tesla Cybertruck.

At one time Musk claimed the electric truck had over a million reservations, but it only sold 20,237 models in 2025. This was a 48.1% sales decline from 2024.

The Model X sold 80,702 units in 2025, and the Model S only sold 9,199 cars. Also, the company experienced an automotive sales decline of 16% overall.

Musk shares that this move is, “Part of our overall shift to an autonomous future. The vehicles that we’ll make will be autonomous vehicles, with the exception of the next-generation Roadster.”

This pivot could eventually lead to the discontinuation of the entire lineup. After a rough year, Elon Musk looks to transition from a hardware-centric business to a physical AI company. Sales of the Optimus Robot to the public will begin in 2027.
