Soren Dixon, Jack Nelson, and Krysta Tsukuhara were home in Oakland, California on Thanksgiving break. All three were sophomores in college. On November 27, the three teens rode with their friend Jordan Miller in a Tesla Cybertruck at 3 a.m. when they crashed the EV. The crash was so intense, that the Tesla quickly became engulfed in flames after crashing into a tree.

Jordan Miller escaped the Cybertruck, making him the sole survivor. The other three died soon after the fire started. His mother, Samantha, helped identify the three who passed.

The Piedmont Fire Department, the police, and the California Highway Patrol are investigating the cause of the fatal fire, but don’t suspect any mechanical issues. They didn’t suspect the EV’s battery was the culprit, either.

The investigation is still ongoing, but authorities believe the EV was traveling well above the speed limit before it crashed.

“It’s safe to say that speed was a factor. Now, are there other factors associated? That is certainly possible,” Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers told CBS News. “But speed is likely a contributing factor to this collision.”

The community, friends, and family of the victims gathered to leave flowers at the crash site.

Viewers didn’t blame the teens

A Tesla Cybertruck has over 600 horsepower and can go from zero to 60 mph in under three seconds. This fact made viewers of the outlet’s YouTube video curious: how did four inexperienced drivers get access to something that fast?

“Teenagers have zero business driving a vehicle that gets to 60 mph in three seconds,” they wrote, earning 191 thumbs up.

Another viewer wrote that the teens being trusted with vehicles that fast and heavy set them up for failure.

“Remember when teens had Honda Civics and old Bimmers? Now they have Cybertrucks and $5,000 e-Bikes,” they said.

Someone else wrote they were surprised to have survived being that young.

“Wreckless Teens and Speed: A story as old as time itself,” they wrote.
