My dad taught me to always keep my tank filled up, my tires inflated, and my car’s maintenance up-to-date. Why? I assumed it was so I’d always be ready for a sudden trip or emergency. Not a police chase. But who knows? Apparently Jonathan Chapa of Nashville, Tennessee never learned this lesson.

On Friday March 29th, Nashville Metro Police noticed Chapa was not only driving with a temporary Tennessee tag instead of a license plate. But he had it installed under a smoked license plate cover which made it entirely illegible. That may be a good way to keep from paying tolls. But it’s also a good way to get pulled over. And that’s exactly what happened.

When police signaled for Chapa to pull over, he floored it. Chapa and his passenger may even have thought they were getting away. But I guess they’ve never heard of a police helicopter either. Nashville police pulled back because Air-1 was hot on the suspects’ tail.

While the officers in the helicopter watched, Chapa pulled off the road and into a gas station. Then he and his passenger hopped out and proceeded to fill up his tires. Before they could get going again, Nashville cruisers arrived and surrounded them.

They found Chapa had been driving on a suspended license. Then they smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle. And the smell wasn’t just coming from the two marijuana vape pens in the vehicle. They found a backpack with a large amount of the drug and digital scales for measuring it out.
