Tesla is currently the leading American manufacturer of battery and plug-in electric vehicles, capturing nearly 25% of the market share. In addition to its development and production of EVs, Tesla also works in clean energy inventions, including battery energy storage and solar panels and tiles.
Found in 2003 as Tesla Motors, the company was the brainchild of entrepreneurs Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. It was named after Nikola Tesla, an American inventor and rival to Thomas Edison. Funding for the company came from various sources, but most notably from PayPal cofounder Elon Musk, who would later become Tesla’s chairman and CEO.
The Tesla Roadster was released in 2008 as the company’s first vehicle, generating buzz as an EV with performance on even-footing with its gas-powered contemporaries. However, the Tesla Roadster was impractical and expensive for the everyday driver, which led to the development of the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model 3 vehicles seen often on roadways today.
