A man fleeing police in California after a car chase needed to be rescued after he fell down a 30-foot hole at a construction site. Making it even worse for him, the deep hole was only about four feet wide. That left him nowhere to go but up and directly into the arms of law enforcement.

The incident occurred last week at around 9:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Heights area of Los Angeles. The man, 27, was wanted by Los Angeles police on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle.

During the car chase, the suspect abandoned the vehicle in Lincoln Heights and tried to evade officers on foot. He ended up running through an industrial area to a nearby construction site where he scaled a wall and fell down a 30-foot hole.

The Los Angeles Fire Department did one smart thing before pulling the suspect out of the hole

Now trapped, NBC 4 News reports the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) was called in to try to extricate him. The Los Angeles Times reports that LAFD firefighters lowered wristlets into the hole and instructed the man to put them on before pulling him out.

Utilizing a rope, the firefighters used an aerial ladder as a high anchor to hoist the suspect up to the surface. “Patient was then lifted and fully extricated from the shaft by rope,” the LAFD wrote.

They referred to the suspect as a “patient” because he had to be transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. After being arrested, of course. Falling 30 feet down into a vertical shaft often results in such an outcome.
