Detroit Man Posted Stolen Car Selfies on Instagram, Arrested
If you just stole an SUV at gunpoint, you might want to keep a low profile. But not Jamar McKissic. After allegedly carjacking a Chevy Tahoe, he posted multiple images to Instagram and was still confused when police came knocking with a warrant.
Here are the charges: McKissic (who authorities say is either 18 or 19 years old) walked up to a Tahoe driver in Detroit on August 5. At 10:30 a.m., McKissic and an accomplice pulled guns and ordered the man out of his SUV. Then one of them hit him with a handgun so hard he had to be hospitalized.
They tore off in the SUV with the victim’s wallet and personal items — including his own handgun — still onboard. He might have suspected it was the last time he’d ever see the SUV. But he didn’t know McKissic.
Two hours later, McKissic posted an Instagram story of himself driving the stolen SUV. He posted again later that day. There was even a picture of McKissic and his accomplice sitting in the back of the SUV, proudly holding up handguns. One of them has been modified illegally.
How investigators identified him
The men might have thought they were being clever. They both hid their faces. But the photo was still tagged with McKissic’s Instagram handle. In addition, McKissic’s unique tattoos are clearly visible.
Later, McKissic tried to sell the Tahoe — on social media, of course.
On November 26, ATF agents showed up at McKissic’s home with a warrant. They found four firearms and even the watch the suspect wore in one of the videos. Obviously, we’ll have to wait for a trial to see if McKissic is guilty. But if it all went down the way it seems, this teenager only has himself to blame.
