Now Stellantis is pausing Jeep Grand Cherokee production in Detroit
With all due respect, Stellantis seems like a dumpster fire. But as a Jeep, Dodge, and Ram enthusiast, I’m rooting for the group to turn things around. A new red flag has emerged for me to worry about as Stellantis pauses Jeep Grand Cherokee production in Detroit.
Stellantis temporarily stops Jeep Grand Cherokee production
As a response to the uncertainty that comes with new tariffs, supply chain constraints, and rising costs, Stellantis has been making cutbacks. A few workers have lost their jobs. Plus, production of SUVs like the Jeep Cherokee has been paused in Canada and Mexico.
Now, the massive auto group is pausing production in Detroit at the Mack and Jefferson facilities! The plants that assemble the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango will be closed during the week of April 28th.
Those at the Mack plant with jobs related to painting and repair are still expected to report for their regular shifts. I might not have to be as worried as I thought. Currently, the downtime will only be for a week. Also,
Stellantis shared that the pause is related to preparing the facility to build the refreshed 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee model.
According to The Detroit News, production of the 2025 model is planning to be expanded as well. Recently, year-over-year sales of the Grand Cherokee declined by 11%. It sold 48,465 SUVs in 2024. Dodge Durango sales dropped by 9% with 13,701 units.
I can’t speak for the Dodge Durango, as its future is on the rocks. However, the refreshed Jeep Grand Cherokee could turn things around.
