Delivery trucks and semi-trucks delivering loads of electronics and other expensive items usually take extra measures to protect their rigs from theft.
However, vehicles carrying massive loads of ice cream were unsuspecting targets in Indiana. Police officers received reports of hundreds of cases of the frozen treat being stolen from trailers in northwest Indiana.
Investigators reviewed video footage and vehicle records while working to find the thief. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Christopher Stewart, was caught on camera. He then admitted to stealing 258 cases of ice cream worth $6,200.
According to Fox 59, he was taking cases over the course of several weeks and selling the dessert for profit. I’m surprised that people were willing to buy from a shady dealer.
Stewart was arrested and charged with theft with a prior conviction, theft where the value exceeds $740, and leaving the scene of a vehicle crash.
Members of the Griffith Police Department joked that this bold and chilly decision landed him a spot on the naughty list with felony theft charges.
Truckers may want to use this story as a reminder to watch for criminals. Cargo theft among tractor-trailers is extremely common, especially around the holidays. Extra locks and security equipment could make a massive difference.
