Suspects in Memphis, Tennessee, nabbed some poor citizen’s 2015 Kia Optima. But it almost seems like the car had a mind of its own and didn’t want to go with them. Why? It left the thieves stranded half a mile later.

According to Memphis police, they were called to the 2900 block of Georgetown Drive at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The report? A stolen 2015 Kia Optima.

In the early 2020s, some clever thieves realized that 2011 to 2021 Kia Optimas (along with several other models of Kia and Hyundai) are especially vulnerable. They discovered that when you tear out the key tumbler, a standard USB cable is the right size to spin the ignition switch. This information went viral on TikTok and inspired a trend of stealing Kias and Hyundais.

The two masked thieves didn’t get very far with the Kia Optima. They went around the block and pulled into Gems Market and gas station at 2756 Getwell Road. Gas station security camera footage shows two tall, thin, masked men get out of the car. They shut off the stolen car—you wouldn’t want to break the “no running engines” gas station rule—filled up the tank, and then got back in. It appears they couldn’t start the car. So they took off on foot.

No word on whether the car was truly broken, or whether they just failed to hot-wire it a second time. Perhaps their USB wire broke.

Whatever the reason the Optima left the thieves stranded, MPD didn’t have to go far to recover the lost sedan.
