It was only a few weeks ago when people were freaking out about the electric Slate truck. Jeff Bezos was over the moon as the tiny EV racked up thousands of preorders. However, it no longer claims to start under $20,000.

The Slate truck no longer starts under $20,000

Jeff Bezos has been on cloud nine. There’s a lot for him to celebrate as he rented Venice for a wedding and his electric Slate truck racked up over $100,000 in pre-orders. However, he was banking on the federal EV tax credit to make the cheap truck dream come true.

At first, the tiny electric truck was being advertised as starting under $20,000. But to make that happen, it would need to qualify for the $7,500 tax incentive.

Without it, the price starts at $27,500, which is remarkably expensive for a basic truck that doesn’t even have a radio. Even kei trucks have radios!

Anyways, according to TechCrunch, Trump is getting rid of the EV tax credit. It will officially end in September. So, if you’re hoping to save $7,500 on an electric vehicle, don’t waste any time.

It’s currently unclear how much the price of the truck will change. Plus, it’s expected to enter production by the end of 2026. Luckily, the $50 fee to preorder the compact pickup is refundable for those who were banking on a cheaper starting price.

The pickup features 150 miles of range, but the available accessory battery provides 240 miles. It can tow up to 1,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,300 lbs. Also, it’s rear-wheel drive only. Can these stats entice those with reservations to pay more?
