Police officers responded to reports of an armed carjacking near Meriter Hospital around 6:10 am. Investigators identified the suspect as 55-year-old Derrick Newton.

They believe the SUV was driving into Brittingham Park nearby. There are tire tracks that show a vehicle traveling about 125 yards offshore onto Monona Bay. However, it broke through the ice.

By the time firefighters with the Madison Fire Department Lake Rescue Team arrived, the vehicle was fully submerged under water. They had to break more ice to provide access for divers. The ice was thick enough for people and vehicles to stand on.

They didn’t find anyone inside. Now the police know that Newton is on the run. According to WTMJ, he is considered to be armed and dangerous. He is in possession of a knife and a firearm. Officers also found clothes that are believed to belong to the suspect in the park.

Newton remains on the run at the moment. Authorities haven’t been able to determine his location. He hasn’t made any direct threats to the public, but the Madison Police are still warning people in the area to use caution.

Authorities have been searching neighborhoods close by. Officers ask that you contact local authorities if you see him. Do not approach him.
