Georgia Sheriff’s Deputy runs down State Trooper going 105 MPH, “Don’t worry about what I’m doing”
Sheriff’s Deputy Quincey Cannon of Taliaferro County, Georgia was on Highway 20 in Georgia late one night when he spotted an SUV absolutely rocketing down the road. Cannon clocked it at 105 mph. He switched on his lights and sirens and took off after the vehicle. He radioed his supervisor to warn about the pursuit with the unsafe driver. But as he got closer he noticed something bizarre: The SUV was a marked Georgia State Police cruiser.
How a Sheriff’s deputy pulled a GSP officer over
Cannon hit his radio again: “Do you want me to continue? It’s a GSP unit.”
Cannon was in his jurisdiction. The GSP unit driving 105 mph without its lights or sirens on was breaking the law, so Cannon’s was a lawful traffic stop. What’s more, there was no guarantee the GSP officer was in the middle of a shift or even safe to drive.
The voice that came back over his radio seemed to agree: “Driving 105 with no lights, no sirens. The issue would be, make sure he’s not DUI.”
By that point, the GSP officer had already pulled over to the side of the road. Cannon stopped behind him and assured his supervisor, “10:4, I’m about to tell him to just slow down.”
Before Cannon can even approach the SUV, the Georgia State Police officer rolled down his window, hung one uniformed arm over his door, then backed up off the breakdown lane and across the grass to look into Cannon’s window. He yells, “Can I help you?”
Cannon says, “Hey, you going 105 man. Just turn your lights on. That’s it.”
The GSP officer responds, “Don’t worry about what I’m doing, have a good night!”
With that, the Georgia State Police officer absolutely floors it, kicking up dust as he swerves back onto the road and disappears into the night. And no, he didn’t turn his lights on.
Cannon muttered, “He got mad about that one” and continued his shift.
The Taliaferro County Sheriff’s office later gave Cannon’s dashcam footage to investigative journalist Billy Blume. But not before Cannon reportedly tried calling the Georgia State Police officer about the incident. According to Blume, the GSP officer was Sergeant Matthew McDonald.
Blume’s reached out to the state Attorney General requesting any complaints or disciplinary actions filed against McDonald that night, as well as McDonald’s dashcam footage. He’s posted his email back-and-fourth as well as audio of his phone calls with various police departments and the Georgia State Government as the months have ticked by without these records released. In the meantime, Blume released the dashcam footage which has gone absolutely viral on social media. See it embedded below:
