Driver cuts off trucker, then shoots him in the leg; wife says she’s not surprised
Trucking community members in San Antonio, Texas are anxious after a road rage incident ended with a trucker shot. The shooter allegedly cut the truck off, the semi collided with it, and the SUV driver shot the trucker in the leg.
Cristina Rodriguez’s husband has been in the trucking industry for more than 10 years. Seeing his world from the passenger’s seat revealed the dangers faced by truckers after starting their own trucking business.
“It’s very scary,” she told KENS 5. “I’m able to go with him now, and I never believed the stories he’s told me until I started going with him.”
She said drivers regularly drive dangerously around her husband without regard.
“I just leave it in God’s hands and I do hope people realize it’s an 80,000-pound truck, it’s not going to stop as fast as the person in front of them,” she said.
Rodriguez’s trucker husband has had his fair share of road rage incidents
Because Texas drivers seem to hate slow trucks, her husband has come with battle wounds trying to avoid an accident.
“It’s just sad, he’ll come home with bruises on top of his feet because he has to slam on the brakes so hard because people, you know, they’ll jump in front and drop their speed,” she said. “You just never know. It’s sad, but it’s the reality now.”
Cristina and her husband pray for the wounded driver. They hope it’ll remind drivers that reacting out of anger can cause people to do something they regret.
Authorities apprehended the shooter
Police arrested Jose Israel Teran, 22, and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The exact cause of the shooting isn’t clear, and police continue to interview the driver and several witnesses.
