On the morning of June 13, a semi-truck driver and his rig suddenly dangled off an overpass with just seconds to react.

The driver was rolling through the notoriously chaotic Spaghetti Junction in Louisville, Kentucky. The semi-truck burst through the guardrail on I-65 South near the Kennedy Bridge and teetered over the edge before falling.

Instead of going down with the cab, officials say the driver jumped out while the semi-truck was still hanging, landing hard but alive. He was alert and treated for minor leg injuries at the scene.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. near the Jefferson Street and Brook Street exits. The trailer, which was empty, dropped from the elevated section of I-65 onto the ramps below that feed into I-64 East and I-71 North.

Flames broke out shortly after impact, but fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread.

Louisville Fire Department Captain Donovan Sims said the semi-truck driver acted quickly once he realized the rig was going over

Metro EMS transported him for evaluation, and he’s expected to recover, WAVE shared.

As for the infrastructure, city officials said engineers with the Kentucky Department of Transportation evaluated the damage. Mayor Craig Greenberg also spoke on the matter.

This stretch of I-65 has seen more than its fair share of drama. Over Derby Weekend, another tractor-trailer was left dangling over the same general area. It was part of a trio of car accidents that jammed traffic for hours.

All lanes heading from Indiana into downtown Louisville on I-65 were shut down from the semi-truck incident. Drivers faced long delays and detours while crews cleared the wreckage and assessed the bridge’s stability.
