Watch San Francisco police spike their own tires
There are bad days, and then there are worse days. A San Francisco police unit had one of the second type on Wednesday, when a chaotic chase caused an officer to drive across SFPD’s own spike strip.
This video comes courtesy of TikTok account Tenderloin Activities (@tl2active). The San Francisco Police Department spotted a silver Audi sedan with tinted windows and ran its plates. Turns out the car was wanted in connection with robberies in Los Angeles. Police originally spotted it at Jones Street and Golden Gate Avenue. Officers chased the car and used two cruisers to block it in.
In the video, you can see a marked Ford Interceptor Utility and an unmarked Ford Crown Victoria block the Audi. Officers sprint toward the silver car and try to break its windows with their batons. Another officer throws a spike strip in front of the silver sedan.
The Audi is backed up to a curb, its front tires spinning as it tries to reverse further. But at some point, its Quattro system must catch some traction, because it races back across the curb and onto the sidewalk.
The police officer in the Interceptor Utility hits the gas and chases after the Audi, running over the spike strip that was in front of the suspect’s car. The Interceptor still tries to pin the Audi against a building but hits a sign instead. See the video embedded below:
The San Francisco PD and a high speed pursuit
After the Audi driver escaped, he fled along the Embarcadero. During the high-speed pursuit, he “was involved in multiple collisions.” SFPD decided to “terminate the pursuit” to keep everyone safe. But they weren’t done hunting the suspect.
SFPD brought in its drone unit and Marine Unit. It eventually found 23-year-old SF resident Natomee Hinton hiding beneath Pier 30 off the Embarcadero. You can see SFPD’s full statement in the post embedded below.
