Roomy American cars are most often cited in DUIs: Study
Driving under the influence is a dangerous and deadly behavior that claims the lives of thousands of U.S. drivers each year. In fact, nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities here involve a drunk driver. It’s important to be aware of the vehicles most commonly associated with DUIs…and they’re often surprising. New data reveals some interesting patterns: Roomier vehicles, including family-friendly SUVs and minivans, tend to be the most frequent offenders when it comes to DUIs.
The Insurify study, based on over 97 million car insurance quotes, identifies the top 10 vehicles with the highest percentage of DUI-related driving records. It turns out that American-made cars, especially SUVs and minivans, are significantly overrepresented. Let’s take a look at the cars that rank highest in this regard and explore why this might be.
1. Buick Envista
DUIs per 1,000 drivers: 72.1
Vehicle Class: Compact SUV
Occupant Capacity: 5
The Buick Envista tops the list with 72.1 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. This compact SUV is known for its efficient comfort and style, but it appears that drivers are also more likely to get behind the wheel after drinking.
2. Buick Encore GX
DUIs per 1,000 drivers: 58.7
Vehicle Class: Subcompact SUV
Occupant Capacity: 5
The Buick Encore GX takes second place with 58.7 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. This subcompact SUV is practical for families, but unfortunately, its drivers show a higher tendency to drive under the influence compared to other vehicles.
3. Chevrolet Bolt
DUIs per 1,000 drivers: 40.6
Vehicle Class: Compact EV
Occupant Capacity: 5
The Chevrolet Bolt EV, a popular electric vehicle, ranks third with 40.6 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. EVs are generally quieter, which makes them more dangerous when driven intoxicated, as they can be harder for pedestrians and cyclists to hear.
4. Chevrolet Astro
DUIs per 1,000 drivers: 29.9
Vehicle Class: Minivan
Occupant Capacity: 8
The Chevrolet Astro minivan, discontinued in 2005, still makes the list with 29.9 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. Older models lack the advanced safety technology present in newer cars, which likely contributes to the higher DUI rate.
5. Chevrolet Blazer
DUIs per 1,000 drivers: 28.1
Vehicle Class: Midsize SUV
Occupant Capacity: 5
The Chevrolet Blazer ranks fifth, with 28.1 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. This sporty midsize SUV is popular among various demographics, and while it offers advanced safety features like forward-collision warning, DUIs still seem prevalent among its drivers.
6. Jaguar XF
DUIs per 1,000 drivers: 27.5
Vehicle Class: Luxury sedan
Occupant Capacity: 5
The luxury Jaguar XF ranks sixth, with 27.5 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. While it’s a premium sedan loaded with high-tech features, its drivers are still significantly more likely to drive impaired compared to the average motorist.
7. Buick Enclave
DUIs per 1,000 drivers: 22.8
Vehicle Class: Full-size SUV
Occupant Capacity: 7
The Buick Enclave, a full-size, three-row SUV with seating for up to seven, comes in at seventh with 22.8 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. Its larger size makes it particularly dangerous in crashes, and it’s not immune to DUIs despite its family-friendly design.
8. Volkswagen New Beetle
DUIs per 1,000 drivers: 17.4
Vehicle Class: Compact Car
Occupant Capacity: 4
Although the Volkswagen New Beetle was discontinued in 2010, its drivers still report a relatively high DUI rate of 17.4 per 1,000. The lack of modern safety features in older vehicles may contribute to the higher number of impaired drivers.
9. Chrysler Pacifica
DUIs per 1,000 drivers: 17.3
Vehicle Class: Minivan
Occupant Capacity: 8
The Chrysler Pacifica is a family minivan, yet its drivers are 2.7 times more likely to have a DUI compared to the average driver. Despite its safety features, including forward-collision warning, DUIs remain a problem for this model.
10. Ford Bronco
DUIs per 1,000 drivers: 16.8
Vehicle Class: Mid-size SUV
Occupant Capacity: 5
The Ford Bronco, with its rugged, truck-based design, rounds out the top 10 list. With 16.8 DUIs per 1,000 drivers, this heavy SUV has a higher risk of causing significant damage in a DUI-related crash.
The data highlights a key takeaway: drivers of large, spacious vehicles like SUVs and minivans tend to have a higher likelihood of DUIs. With so many American-made models at the top of the list, it’s clear that class size and passenger comfort don’t always guarantee safety on the road. We’ve also reported on Tesla’s shockingly high accident fatality rate, despite it’s advanced safety features. Like in DUI scenarios, a car’s safety ratings are less realized when the operator isn’t attentive or coherent.
