Marques Brownlee, a tech-savvy YouTuber (@MarquesBrownlee) with almost 20 million subscribers lost an influential follower recently. Elon Musk was one of those several million, but hastily hit unfollow after Brownlee broke up with his Cybertruck for a Rivian.

As Tesla finally began deliveries for the Cybertruck to customers who had waited years, Brownlee was one of the first to review it. He called it “iconic,” and faced a lot of backlash for defending it.

He liked the Cybertruck enough to buy one for himself and used it as a video rig to film other cars. However, the Rivian R1T quickly ended his affair with the Cybertruck. He shared an Instagram story showing that he had sold the Tesla after driving it less than 5,000 miles.

Brownlee reportedly took a $50,000 loss when selling it due to the trim and add-ons, but when asked why he preferred the Rivian, he wrote on his X, “TL;DR I like the Rivian better.”

Of course, in Musk’s typical manner, the second Brownlee wrote “Rivian” and “better” in the same sentence on his social platform, he unsubscribed.

Brownlee has always liked Rivians

One year ago, Brownlee posted a 14-minute video about the Rivian R1S, titled: “The Rivian R1S is… The Best SUV Ever?” In the first 10 seconds, he says, “The best SUV you can buy right now just happens to be electric.”

While he liked the Cybertruck’s unique shape and promising technology, the euphoria quickly evaporated once he started experiencing manufacturing issues. His truck was one of 4,000 to be recalled eight months ago due to a faulty accelerator pedal.

He made a YouTube short to explain this, writing, “Don’t say I didn’t warn you about early VIN Cubertruck manufacturing issues.”

“It goes from a pretty annoying build quality issue to a fairly serious safety concern,” he said.
