Wait a second, is the Ram 1500 falling behind on tech? Or is it falling short of its promises? One convenient feature was supposed to become available two years ago. However, owners complain that it still doesn’t work.

The Ram 1500 digital key feature is two years late

Owners of the Ram 1500 feel like they’ve been shorted as a high tech feature still doesn’t work after two years of waiting. The Digital Key feature was highlighted as a new feature during a 2023 press release.

It states that Ram owners can add a digital key to their smartphone or watch to access and start their vehicle. After following a few simple steps, the key can be added to your smartphone’s wallet.

This should allow drivers to access their trucks when their phones are in their pockets. An NFC-based smart card is provided as a backup to unlock and start the vehicle when your smartphone isn’t available.

According to Pickup Truck Talk, the Ram trucks site features photos of a smart watch with a truck behind it, but the tech still doesn’t work. Owners have reached out to customer service centers for answers, but haven’t received clear answers.

Noah Thanos of Ram Communications shared that the digital key has a limited function enabled on Ram trucks as the brand works to ensure quality and consistency for customers. Customers receive the RFID card with their trucks, and it should maintain full functionality.

Tim of Pickup Truck Talk bought a Ram 1500 trim level with an equipment package that includes the feature. However, he can’t get it to work. Other drivers shared that this feature is part of the reason why they went with a Ram truck, so they’re frustrated.

Reportedly, the digital key will be fully enabled on qualifying models with an over-the-air update in the future. But how much longer will people have to wait?
