Lil Bow Wow posted a private jet to Instagram, but fans spotted him flying coach the same day
Shad Gregory Moss (Lil Bow Wow, later just Bow Wow), caught Snoop Dogg’s attention when he was just six. He signed with Columbia Records by 11 and released his debut at 13. He starred in the sports comedy Like Mike and joined the Fast and Furious franchise in Tokyo Drift. By 2017, he was an elite performer as both a film star and multi-platinum recording artist. He certainly didn’t need to flex or lie to impress anyone. He did anyway.
The rapper took to his Instagram to post a photo of a Mercedes limo and a private car parked in front of a private jet. The plane’s staircase was down, as if waiting for him to climb aboard. He tagged the photo’s location as Dekalb Peachtree Airport (PDK). He wrote out the caption: “Travel Day. NYC press run for Growing Up Hip Hop. Lets gooo. I promise to bring yall the hottest show EVER.”
Later that day, a Snapchat user posted a photo of Shad Moss on a commercial airline flight to their story. The caption: “So this guy lil bow wow is on my flight to NY.” The Snapchat user called out the fake Instagram post and concluded SMH.
Had Shad Moss just posted an old photo of his private jet, then flown Delta to save some gas? Nope. The plane wasn’t even his. The photo was a stock photo of a private plane puled from the website of a Fort Lauderdale limousine company.
Some fans dug even deeper, noting Shad Moss had Tweeted that he was too tired from filming his TV show to accept an offer to watch the Atlanta Falcons from a private suite. The Atlanta Falcons weren’t even playing that weekend.
The internet had a field day with the bogus posts. In fact, it inspired a long-running Instagram tag, #Bowwowchallenge posters would use when they posted an overly-glamorous representation of their life next to the harsh reality. Moss appeared to responds with an Instagram post that just said, “My hustle is non stop. I never stop hustling.”
Eight years later, Bow Wow is doing fine. He launched a new restaurant in his hometown of Atlanta last year. He made a cameo in the latest Fast and Furious movie the year before that. The #Bowwowchallenge hashtag has faded into obscurity. His 2017 post is still a bit of a meme, but its a good reminder how superficial the early days of Instagram was, and the music industry as a whole can be.
