Police feared suicide, but hot truck driver just wanted a swim
Police in the Netherlands got an emergency call about a man under a bridge calling for help. Fearing a suicide attempt, they scrambled everything they had. But when the police helicopter, fire brigade, ambulance, and sea rescue arrived, they found a Hungarian truck driver who said he was just feeling hot.
In defense of the Dordrecht Police Department’s response, the man was clinging to a ladder under the bridge and calling for help. But by the time authorities arrived, a passing boater had ferried him back to land.
His truck, meanwhile, was parked in the breakdown lane of the Moerdijk Bridge. According to the police report (translated via Google): “Keeping in mind that the man intended to take his own life, we started the conversation.” But authorities got a surprise.
“The Hungarian truck driver, like us, found it a beautiful, warm summer evening. Once he arrived at the Moerdijk Bridge, he decided it was time to cool off.”
This bridge, part of the A16 motorway, crosses over the Hollands Diep river. The Hungarian driver discovered the fast-moving water “was a bit more dangerous after all.”
Police say he left town with a ticket for parking on the shoulder, another one for jumping off the bridge, and a “life lesson.”
