Man Sees STP Oil Filter For Sale At AutoZone For $70. Is It Worth It?
It’s easy to become overwhelmed when shopping for motorcycle products.
Like all things that have to do with your bike, falling down a rabbit hole of “which of these products is best for my ride?” and “should I really spend that much?” is an experience that’s all too common.
Over time, you generally get a good sense of how much things are supposed to cost — and what’s worth your money.
That said, seeing a new product on the shelf — with a new, high price tag to match — may make you wonder if you’re causing damage to your bike by not buying top-shelf gear.
But does that mean that you have to spend $70 on an oil filter? One man found himself asking that very question on a recent trip to AutoZone.
What’s The Deal With This Oil Filter?
In a video with over 79,000 views, TikTok user @old_rm80 shows a lineup of oil filters on a shelf. Most are priced at a maximum of around $16.
However, one oil filter says it’s premium — and has a $69.99 price tag to prove it.
“Someone in corporate really said ‘[expletive] yeah 70$ oil filter,” the TikToker writes in the text overlaying the video.
This TikToker isn’t the only one to notice the high price tag. In a post on Facebook on January 19, 2026, a user wrote, “Gotta love the price changes. This was $21.99 on Saturday.” The included image is of the same oil filter.
Is It Supposed To Be This Expensive?
It seems like the answer is “no.”
On the AutoZone website, a project matching the same part number (S6065C) and SKU (70003) is selling for just $19.99.
The TikToker seems to affirm that this was an error in a comment. Responding to a comment reading, “looks like they fixed it, at least at my store,” he wrote: “Yeah it was on the emergency price changes that NOBODY did today before we caught it at the end of the closing shift.”
In short, it appears that this high price tag was simply an error. However, this got many people wondering: how much should you pay for an oil filter?
What’s The Right Price For An Oil Filter?
As we’ve previously covered, many motorcycle enthusiasts swear that you should change your oil filter every time you change your oil.
How often you should change your oil depends on your specific bike, but a good rule of thumb is that motorcycles using mineral-based oils should change their oil every 2,000 miles or at least twice per year. Bikes using semi-synthetic oils should be changed every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. While bikes using fully synthetic oil are best changed every 7,000 to 10,000 miles.
Some experts also recommend changing your oil filter every 2,000 to 3,000 miles, regardless of how often you’re changing your oil.
If you’re a frequent rider, the prospect of buying a new oil filter for every one of these changes may make you question whether it’s worth it to buy a pricey oil filter. Thankfully, this is one area of motorcycle maintenance where expensive does not necessarily mean better.
In general, a rider should expect to pay between $6 and $20 for an oil filter. For that price, a motorcycle owner can expect to get good quality gear that will last them until the next change.
For example, a Reddit discussion of the best motorcycle oil filters listed Wix, Bosch, K&N, NAPA Gold, and AMSOIL. All of these brands have filters available for around $20 or less. An independent analysis also recommended filters from Mobil-1 and Purolator, which can both be purchased for around $20 or less.
Naturally, there are some exceptions. For example, it may be difficult to find quality oil filters for rare or old bikes. Consequently, the prices can be substantially higher.
So Is Buying A $70 Oil Filter Worth It?
Still, if you find yourself staring at a $70 oil filter at AutoZone wondering if it’s worth it, we can safely say that the answer is “probably not.”
