Teenagers can be a handful. But most rebellious phases just involve sleeping in, skipping class, or sneaking out to find a party. Joshua Jiles of Stow, Ohio, took things a bit further. The 17-year-old stole a dump truck, rammed police cruisers, and led cops on a 50-mile chase.

Jiles left home early on December 4, 2010. His dad later told police he smelled alcohol on Jiles’ breath, but officers said they didn’t smell any during the arrest. Whatever the truth, Jiles wasn’t alone. He met up with two 13-year-olds, somehow stole a 1996 Mack dump truck, and hit the road.

When police caught up, Jiles floored it. They deployed spike strips, but Jiles swerved and dodged six attempts to blow his tires. That’s some pretty impressive maneuvering. Stow Police Chief Louis Dirker later said, “It’s very strange that we get involved in a chase with a dump truck.” Officers quickly realized the teen wasn’t just reckless—he was intentional.

Jiles rammed police cruisers, shoving at least one out of his way. He knew enough to throw the truck in reverse and drive over the cruisers while backing up, to do minimal damage to his truck. He even reversed for nearly two minutes, before accidentally slamming a pair of civilian cars. Dirker described the danger: “The guy was so aggressive in trying to get away that he would think nothing of damaging my cruisers and putting my officers at risk.”

In one of the wildest moments, Jiles slowed the dump truck and let the two 13-year-olds jump out. But he didn’t follow them. Instead, he shifted gears and sped off again.

Finally putting the brakes on the teen’s dump truck chase

Officers dodged bricks, tarps, and even a fire extinguisher Jiles hurled out the window. Sgt. Steven Dunton said Jiles “appeared to be in control of the dump truck at all times.” He added, “Joshua handled the dump truck very well, taking deliberate actions and demonstrating an exceptional level of maneuverability.”

Even after spike strips blew out a tire, Jiles kept going. He pushed the battered dump truck onward until it smashed into a guardrail, ending the chase.

The consequences were serious. Jiles faced two dozen charges, including felonious assault and receiving stolen property. He served time in juvenile detention, with the threat of 10 years in adult prison hanging over him if he stepped out of line.

Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio suspended his license until age 21 and ordered restitution. Jiles’ driving issues didn’t stop there. In 2017, Streetsboro police arrested him for DUI and improper handling of a firearm.

The good news? Jiles must have completed his juvenile sentence without incident because he didn’t end up in prison. The bad news? He was still making risky choices behind the wheel. The hope now is that Jiles continues learning from past mistakes—before anyone else gets hurt. He’s one whiz of a driver, so if he gets his act together he’d make a great trucker.
