Ohio man robs a Brinks truck and takes hostages

As most of the country faces frigid winter conditions, the cold isn’t strong enough to deter crimes. Ohio residents must be better at handling the cold. Unfortunately, some police officers didn’t get to relax in their warm cars as a violent crime unfolded in the afternoon.

They responded to reports of a Brinks truck robbery outside the Elyria AT&T store on West River Road at approximately 3:02 PM. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old John Johnson, held the driver at gunpoint and forced him into the truck.

He stole an undisclosed amount of cash and fled in a separate vehicle. Police officers spotted the car in Lorain, and a chase ensued in residential areas. According to Fox 8, he reached speeds over 100 mph.

Elyria Police Chief James Welsh shares that the suspect “showed no regard for the safety of motorists or pedestrians.” Police officers decided to use spike strips to stop the suspect.

Johnson exited the vehicle and fled to a nearby apartment complex. He forced his way inside a unit and held a mother of four hostage. Welsh describes her as being “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Johnson presented a handgun as an Elyria officer fired his service weapon, injuring him. He was rushed to the hospital by emergency responders, where he later perished.

People celebrate the officer for being a hero. His actions stopped the suspect from harming anyone else. Johnson’s car was also filled with money from the robbery.
